Brand - Ideal Flatsy Dolls
"She's Flat and All That!."
Introduced by the Ideal Toy Company in 1969 through 1973. The Flatsy dolls are flat dolls made of soft, bendable vinyl plastic with wires inside the limbs, neck, and body so that they can be posed. They have long hair, which usually goes to the floor, generally in vivid colors.
Each Flatsy has a "theme" and comes with an accessory and a cardboard liner. They also have a plastic clip to hold the doll in place on the liner card, which also detached for play time. Also, advertised to "Wear her on your clothes".
The original Flatsy Dolls were sold in inventive frame presentations with accessories, source [1969 JCPenney Christmas Book, Page 305], [1970 JCPenney Christmas Book, Page 453], and [1971 JCPenney Christmas Book, Page 433].
The Fashion Flatsy Dolls were sold in their own "Scene" with accessories, source [1970 JCPenney Christmas Book, Page 452], [1970 Montgomery Ward Christmas Book, Page 336], and [1970 Sears Christmas Book, Page 596].
Flatsy dolls left over in the mid-70s were repackaged into white boxes. In 1994 the dolls were reintroduced by Just Toys in a size similar to the original mini, then again in 2008 by Schylling in a size more similar to the medium.
Mini — 2-½ inches tall
Medium — 5 inches tall
Fashion — 8½ inches tall
The Mini and Medium dolls are similar in appearance, while the Fashions are very tall and thin. The doll is also possible to wear as a pin.
The original Flatsy Dolls are marked with the Ideal mark in an oval on the doll's back. Many of the early dolls were made in Hong Kong, and a typical mark would read IDEAL // (OVAL) 1969 // Pat. Pending // HONG KONG. Also, the hair is not rooted in the back of head, only on the top.
